More Neutron Screens For ISIS Second Target Project
Applied Scintillation Technologies (AST) has received an
order for an additional 24 m2 neutron screen for use in new
instrumentation in the ISIS Second Target Project (TS-2) at
the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. This follows on
from the original order of 61 m2 screen announced
in June 2007. The second neutron source at the ISIS
facility will offer unique instrumentation and unrivalled
potential for structural and dynamical studies of matter,
using cold neutrons and high resolution spectroscopy.
Initially featuring seven new instruments for neutron scattering
instruments for inter-disciplinary studies, applications will
predominantly focus on Soft Condensed Matter, Bio-Molecular
Sciences and Advanced Materials. AST screens will be
used primarily on the 'NIMROD' near- and intermediate-range
order diffractometer, but also on the 'Offspec' advanced spin
echo reflectometer, 'Inter' high-resolution, high-flux neutron
reflectometer, and 'Polref' polarised neutron reflectometer.
The start of experimental programme at the ISIS Second Target
Station is scheduled for October 2008.
AST Sales & Commercial Director, Stuart Quinn, said:
"Naturally we are delighted to receive this order, which
reinforces AST's position as a world leader on the manufacture
of neutron screens. In less than a year we have received
four orders for screens for neutron detectors at ISIS Target
Station 2 and Oak Ridge National Laboratories, two of the
best-known spallation neutron sources in the world."
"Our screens are available in large area formats and
provide good resolution, overcoming the size, cost and handling
difficulties of 3He detectors", he continued. "Crucially,
AST has the knowledge and expertise based on years of experience
to enable us to develop custom products for neutron detection
and imaging in collaboration with our customers' needs".
