Applied Scintillation Technologies Sells 2000th Levy-Hill MkVI UV/Vis Radiometer/Photometer

February 2009

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the recipient of the 2000th Levy-Hill MkVI radiometer/photometer manufactured by Applied Scintillation Technologies Ltd (AST). Originally launched in 1998, the instrument is a hand-held, dual-action portable unit for quantitative measurement of UV or visible light intensity. It is used for UV lamp calibration and ambient light level measuring as part of fluorescent penetration inspection methods.

AST Sales & Commercial Director, Stuart Quinn, commented: “2000 units is a significant milestone for this product, and reflects the continuing need for the MkVI. It also has a superb service history and only recently the unit bearing serial number 03 was returned to us for recalibration! The MOD has been a regular customer over the years for the Levy Hill MkV which it uses for calibration of light sources used for flaw and crack detection. Other major customers have included GE Aircraft Engines and GKN Westland.”

AST is also a designated calibration authority for leading aerospace and defence companies, offering a full calibration service traceable to national standards. The company also offers a UV and white light repair and calibration service.

The lightweight and robust MkVI meter is characterized by a large area integrated detector head, designed to minimize errors from hot spots within the lamp under test. An automatic back-lit display allows measurements to be made in low light levels or under UV operation. The unit complies fully with British Standards BS EN ISO 3059:2001 (for UV operation), BS667 (for white light operation) and comes fully calibrated under the quality assurance requirements of BS5781/ISO 10012/1 (1992).
